Try the cheapest capable option first: local model → free-tier cloud model → paid model.
Why it works
Most automation steps are simple. Only a small share of tasks need the most capable models, so most calls never reach the paid tier.
Watch out for
Token expiry on CLI-based providers, and silent quality drops when a fallback kicks in. Log which rung handled each request.
